Keynote: How Do You Create A Strategic Reader?
Over twenty-five years ago, Valerie Ellery realized that her son had a problem with reading. This very personal experience launched her journey in the quest for understanding what proficient readers do. She set out on a journey to “reach and teach” the whole child and help those like her son “believe and achieve”. Valerie will inspire us all to rise above the challenges we face as educators and believe that the student’s in today’s classrooms can be self-regulated, strategic readers and writers!
Motivate, Engage, & Create Strategic Readers: Focusing on Small Group Instruction
Join Valerie Ellery as she shares inspiring ways to motivate and engage the whole learner. Participants will be equipped with ways to incorporate curriculum (i.e., reading strategies), assessment (i.e., higher-order, teacher talk, selection for grouping), and the elements of rigorous instruction (i.e., effective techniques for small group instruction) focusing on strategies in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Participants will practice scaffolding techniques and will leave valued with answers to their own relevant questions:
Am I lifting the level of thinking through accountable-text talk, which increases critical thinking in my classroom?
How can I incorporate a strategic, inquiry-based lesson design?
How will the techniques support social-learning literacy instruction?
